An Interview with
Dr. Tracy Carver (she/her)
Hi!
SO TRACY, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
This question has always been a tricky one for me to answer. Although my whole family is from Texas, I didn’t move here until 2007.
HUH? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?
Well, my father joined the US Marine Corps before I was born and became career military. He served his country for an astounding 34 years! As a military family, we moved from base to base every few years. I was born in California, learned to ride a bike in Japan, and went to my first school dance in North Carolina. Looking back, I actually went to eight different schools between kindergarten and 12th grade. Whew!
After graduating high school in northern Virginia, I attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. I finally made my way to the Lone Star State in 2007 to begin graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. After living in so many different places, I feel very lucky to call the city of Austin home. As the saying goes, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.”
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS
I’m an award winning Licensed Psychologist in the State of Texas. In 2015, I launched my own company, building a thriving private practice in Austin. Readers of Austin Fit Magazine voted me one of the Best Mental Health Professionals in Austin four years in a row (2016-2019). I’ve been featured in wikiHow, Austin Monthly, Austin Woman Magazine, Life in Travis Heights, and on KVUE (ABC Austin) and KEYE (CBS Austin). For over three years, I served as the Clinical Director of Presence Wellness. I helped launched several psychology training programs and mentored aspiring psychologists.
I earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and an M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. I trained at Harvard University, completing an internship in Clinical Psychology through Harvard Medical School. In 2018, I received specialized training in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy.
In addition, I’m a 200 hour certified yoga teacher (Sukha Yoga), a 200 hour certified meditation teacher (Sukha Yoga), and a Level 2 iRest Yoga Nidra teacher (iRest Institute).
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
I love the performing arts - in another life I was definitely on stage! I grew up dancing (ballet, tap and jazz) and have discovered new styles as an adult. These days you’ll find me building strength and mobility at the pole studio or two-steppin’ in my cowboy boots at the dance hall.
While movement came naturally to me as a child, singing was not my strong suit. I’ll never forget a theater teacher in high school telling me I couldn’t sing. I was crushed! But y’all, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. As a 30-something adult, I decided to embark on a singing journey. I took private voice lessons for about five years, and it was one of the most vulnerable and transformative things I’ve ever done. Sticking with it was challenging, emotional, and therapeutic. After years of hard work, I’m finally confident in my voice and love to sing!
Currently I’m learning how to play the violin. I have zero background in string instruments, but I’m loving the process. It feels like a workout for my brain and my body.
I also love to solo travel! I’m happiest in jungle climates, like the Peruvian Amazon, where the abundance of life is palpable. And traveling solo means I can follow my intuition and find that sweet balance between relaxation and adventure.
